TRACK AND FIELD: Pisgah girls, North Jackson boys continue their reign as county champions

The 2025 Jackson County Track and Field Meet ended the same way it did the previous year. 

The Pisgah girls and North Jackson boys track and field teams repeated as county champions during the annual county meet Monday at North Jackson High School’s R.D. Hicks Stadium in Stevenson.

It was the third consecutive county title for the Pisgah girls and their eighth in the past 11 years. The Eagles finished with a team score of 219.17 points, followed by Skyline (185.33), North Jackson (116.5), Woodville (47), Section (18) and North Sand Mountain (14).

“We knew going in this was going to be a tough county meet to have a chance to win,” said Pisgah girls track and field coach Gus Hembree. “Coach (Hunter) Steele at North Jackson and Coach (Tanner) Shelton at Skyline have done a fantastic job building up their girls teams. We are always happy to win county, but this year is a little sweeter because of the level of competition from all the county schools.”

The Pisgah girls had six event champions and 28 Top-5 finishes.

“This group of girls has worked hard this season,” Hembree said. “Many of them have taken very little time off from cross county. The influx of the basketball players has been big for us. Obviously they understand what it takes to win on a big stage. This is one of the larger groups we have had in a few years. We got a lot of production from our young kids this year.”

Meanwhile, North Jackson claimed its second straight boys county championship. The Chiefs had a team score of 224, followed by Pisgah (195), NSM (82.5), Section (40.5), Woodville (25) and Woodville (9).

“Being able to go back-to-back really shows the consistency and resilience of the team to respond and keep getting better each and every day,” said North Jackson boys track and field coach Hunter Steele. “These guys are laying the foundation for a successful program that we can continue to build on year in and year out. I am very proud to be their coach.”

The North Jackson boys had nine event champions and 31 Top-5 finishes.

“I am super proud of the guys for going out and competing to help bring home the county championship,” said North Jackson track and field coach Hunter Steele.“This truly is a testament to the hard word and dedication the team has put in all year. Several of the guys willingly stepped up to compete in new events to help us steal points in some areas that we have not been historically good at. That willingness to put the team first is something you really look for in a successful team and that was the difference.”

Skyline’s Makayla Amador and Pisgah’s Katie Edwards had the most county event titles in the varsity girls division, Amador won the 100-meter dash (12.20 seconds), the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches), the long jump (14-07) and the triple jump (32-09) county titles while Pisgah’s Katie Edwards won county titles in the 800-meter run (3:02.10), 1600-meter run (6:27.56) and 3200-meter run (16:10) and the 4x800-meter relay. North Jackson’s Alley Stubblefield won three county titles in the 200-meter dash (27.28), the 400-meter dash (1:05.90) and the 4x100-meter relay while Skyline’s Hope Adkins won county titles in the 300-meter hurdles (55.00) and the 4x400 relay.

In the boys division, North Jackson’s Haven Massengile and Terrell Chester and NSM’s Owen Brooks won three event county titles each. Massengile won county titles in the 100-meter dash (10.41), the 200-meter dash (22.25) and the 4x100-meter relay, Chester took the county titles in 110-meter hurdles (16.63), 300-hurdles (46.62) and high jump (5-08) and Brooks won county titles in the 400-meter dash (56.06) and the 4x400- and 4x800-meter relays.
