Vermont officials observe start of Child Abuse Prevention Month
MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont officials on Tuesday observed the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Lieutenant Governor John Rodgers read a proclamation signed by the governor and the group Prevent Child Abuse Vermont placed 1,000 pinwheels on the Statehouse lawn to signify the more than 1,400 children in foster care in the state.
Vermont DCF Commissioner Chris Winters says the month is a call to action to safeguard the well being all of Vermont’s youth. “Preventing child abuse isn’t just about responding after the harm has occurred, it’s about building a foundation of support, education, and resources to prevent that abuse before it happens,” he said.
Prevent Child Abuse Vermont encourages people to get involved throughout the month by wearing blue on Friday, participating in a fundraiser at the end of the month, and purchasing a pinwheel to show support.
