Julia Varhola threw a five-inning perfect game, striking out 12, and went 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs to lead Hempfield to a 13-0 victory over Uniontown (2-2) in nonsection softball Thursday.
It was the second no-hitter in as many days for the Spartans (6-0). Riley Miller no-hit Mt. Lebanon in five innings Wednesday.
Claire Mitchell went 2 for 4 with a grand slam and five RBIs, Lauren Howard drove in a pair and Allie Cervola tripled and doubled for the Spartans.
Albert Gallatin 16, Mapletown 2 – Winning pitcher Gabriella Delorenzo struck out three and allowed two unearned runs in five no-hit innings as Albert Gallatin (2-1) defeated Mapletown (2-3) in nonsection play. Jenna Myers doubled and Ellie Seese tripled for the Colonials.
Allderdice 19, Westinghouse 0 – Braelyn Altman threw a three-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Allderdice to a City league win. Natalia Connor went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs, Yana Dwyer doubled twice and knocked in four and Gracie Whitt had three hits and three RBIs for the Dragons.
Apollo-Ridge 11, Valley 1 – Winning pitcher Jocelyn Synder struck out 13 in five innings and went 2 for 2 with a double and five RBIs to lead Apollo-Ridge (4-1) to a nonsection win. Julie Bertino singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Olivia Saxion went 3 for 3 for Apollo-Ridge.
Armstrong 16, Freeport 5 – Evalyn Crissman went 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs, Daria Stross hit a three-run homer and Jordyn Klingensmith and winning pitcher Natalie Zeigler each slugged a home run and drove in two as Armstrong (4-1) beat Freeport (3-2) in a nonsection matchup. Addyson Caruso hit a solo home run for the Yellowjackets.
Avonworth 10, Saint Joseph Academy (OH) 0 – Ali Linhart threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and Emma Obersteiner had two hits and an RBI for Avonworth (2-0) at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Beaver 12, Laurel 5 – Olivia Peabody homered, winning pitcher Taylor Young and Cali Coups each knocked in a pair while Sami Springman and Jaedyn Brown each doubled and drove in a run to lead Beaver (5-1) to a nonsection win. Maddie Evans doubled and finished with two RBIs for Laurel (3-2).
Blackhawk 10, Moon 2 – Mia Yenges doubled and drove in three runs and Addy Ramer went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs as Blackhawk (2-1) beat Moon (2-2) in nonsection play. Brynn Hysong and Lila Grimm each knocked in a run while Peyton Kimberlin got the win for the Cougars. Taya Fitzgerald went 2 for 2 with two RBIs for the Tigers.
Carmichaels 15, Monessen 1 – Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak yielded one run on two hits and struck out 12 in five innings while going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs to lead Carmichaels (3-0) in a nonsection win. Ashton Batis blasted a home run and drove in two while Ali Jacobs went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Mighty Mikes. Grace Clingenpeel launched a solo homer for Monessen (0-2).
Chartiers-Houston 10, Morgantown (W. Va.) 0 – Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri threw five shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out 10, and helped her cause by going 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs to lead Chartiers-Houston (4-0) at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Lauren Rush and Ella Richey each doubled and drove in a run for the Buccaneers. Grace Robinson went 2 for 3 for Morgantown.
Deer Lakes 5, Hopewell 2 – Siena Plummer doubled and knocked in a pair of runs, Gracie Spagnolo tripled and drove in a run and Laney Dineff earned the win as Deer Lakes (2-5) defeated Hopewell (2-2) in nonsection play. Riley Jones and Haley Friess each plated a run for the Lancers. Allsion Ramaley went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Vikings.
Kenston (Ohio) 3, Waynesburg 1 – Gina Tedrow struck out 15 and yielded three runs on five hits while also going 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and Avery Davis also collected two hits as Waynesburg (2-3) lost a nonsection matchup to Kenston.
Mohawk 14, Wilmington 0 – Ally Granato blasted a grand slam and Lydia Cole homered, doubled and had three RBIs to power Mohawk (3-1) to a nonsection win over Wilmington. Alivia Hare finished with two RBIs and Kaitlyn Hare drove in a run while Reagan Magno gave up six hits and fanned six in five shutout innings to get the win for the Warriors. Avery Harlan doubled for Wilmington.
Montour 17, Western Beaver 13 – Shania Cope went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs, Hailey Staub homered and drove in two and Natalie Ciamacco belted a solo home run as Montour (1-3) bested Western Beaver (0-4) in a nonsection offensive explosion. Bella Colatriano homered and knocked in four runs while Elizabeth Squicquero and Izzie Lefebvre each drove in two for the Golden Beavers. Caley Hughes picked up the win for the Spartans.
Neshannock 12, New Castle 1 – Gabby Quinn homered twice and drove in five runs and winning pitcher Addy Frye struck out 11 and walked none for Neshannock (2-0) in a nonsection victory. Jaidon Nogay had a single, a double and two RBIs while Miley Anderson had two doubles and an RBI.
North Allegheny 7, Canon-McMillan 3 – Twila Goulding went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs while Erin Fadgen and Zoe Rychel each doubled and drove in a run to lead North Allegheny (2-4, 1-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Aurora Shirdon doubled for Canon-McMillan (2-2, 1-1). Sammy Plotsko struck out eight in the win for the Tigers.
North Catholic 12, Ambridge 0 – Winning pitcher Kennedy Brown struck out seven and gave up no hits in three innings while Samantha Foley doubled and drove in three runs to lead North Catholic (4-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Nicole Paschel doubled and Clare Kotwica knocked in a pair for the Trojans. Mackenzie Keber had the only hit for Ambridge (2-2, 0-1).
North Hills 12, Burrell 11 – Addyson Wrigley went 5 for 6 with a home run and three RBIs, Emma Culver doubled and drove in two and Makenzie Roskwitalski doubled as North Hills (3-1) scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh to edge out Burrell (2-3) in a nonsection slugfest. Abigail Sutton was the winning pitcher. Addy Wojtczak homered while Santina Gamboa and Braelyn Jones each had three RBIs for the Bucs.
Norwin 4, Butler 2 – Winning pitcher Abbie Telli tripled and knocked in a run, Makenna Black doubled and drove in a run and Rachel Minteer had an RBI as Norwin (1-4, 1-0) defeated Butler (0-5, 0-1) in Section 1-6A. Alaina Daily doubled for the Golden Tornado.
Oakland Catholic 2, Jeannette 0 – Kennedy Waffensmith tossed a complete game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out three, while Natalie Waffensmith and Chloe Fettis each had a hit as Oakland Catholic (1-1) beat Jeannette (2-3) in nonsection play. Abigail Shaw, Mia Sarpolis and Raylyn Gallik doubled for the Jayhawks.
Pine-Richland 18, Woodland Hills 0 – Iliana Aggelou tripled and finished with five RBIs, Calle Henne crushed a home run and drove in two, Abbey Laurent tripled and knocked in a pair and Olivia Moore finished with a double and two RBIs as Pine-Richland (3-0, 2-0) rolled to a Section 1-6A win against Woodland Hills (0-3, 0-2). Abigail Skripac drove in a run and Elle Myers got the win for the Rams.
Plum 17, Fox Chapel 7 – Liana Yusko homered and drove in four runs, Mackenzie Marotta went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs and winning pitcher Riley Stephans knocked in three to power Plum (4-1, 1-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Danielle Pici homered and Bella Tavella doubled and drove in three for the Mustangs. Summer Burkhart and Ella Eisner each finished with two RBIs for Fox Chapel (4-1, 0-1).
Quaker Valley 15, Sto-Rox 0 – Winning pitcher Olivia Hoose struck out seven in three no-hit innings while doubling and driving in three as Quaker Valley (1-0) shut out Sto-Rox (0-4) in nonsection play. Natalie DeGori also doubled and drove in three and Isabella Jarrett tripled twice and had three RBIs for the Quakers.
Sewickley Academy 4, Serra Catholic 1 – Winning pitcher Charlotte Andrews gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out 15 while Keira Church doubled as Sewickley Academy (1-0) defeated Serra Catholic (0-3) in nonsection play. Kelly Morrissey gave up four runs, three unearned, on five hits and fanned 12 while slapping a double and driving in a run for the Golden Eagles.
South Allegheny 12, Ligonier Valley 6 – Carrera Conley and Cadence McBride each hit a home run and drove in two runs and Aubrey Pacewicz doubled and knocked in two runs as South Allegheny (3-0) doubled up Ligonier Valley (0-5) in nonsection play. Abby Springer went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Rams. Ava Brown got the win for the Gladiators.
South Fayette 20, Mars 3 – Evie Vuono homered and knocked in three runs, Maddie Cavenaugh doubled twice and drove in three and Addie Vierra finished with three RBIs to power South Fayette (5-2) to a nonsection win over Mars (1-5). Abby Robinson homered and drove in three for the Fightin’ Planets. Emma Earley got the win for the Lions.
Southmoreland 10, Belle Vernon 3 – Riley Puckey doubled and crushed two home runs, Makayla Etling homered, doubled and had three RBIs and Makayla Brown also hit a home run, doubled and knocked in a pair to power Southmoreland (2-2) to a nonsection win. Sydney Callaway doubled and drove in a run for Belle Vernon (2-4). Zoey Murphy got the win for the Scotties.
Union 12, Ellwood City 8 – Irelyn Fisher crushed two home runs and drove in three runs while winning pitcher Mia Preuhs and Korynne Shannon each homered and knocked in a pair of runs to boost Union (3-0) to a nonsection win. Crystal Folinio went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for Ellwood City (3-2).
Upper St. Clair 6, Trinity 2 – Winning pitcher Brooklyn Kemp gave up two runs on five hits and struck out 10 while Nora Stutzman drove in a pair of runs to lead Upper St. Clair (5-0) to a nonsection win. Rachel Scharrer and Kenzie Pope each knocked in a run for the Panthers. Alexa Zawacki went 2 for 4 with a triple for Trinity (2-3).
The Ville 7, OLSH 6 – Julia Pinter went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and Neveah Morin knocked in two runs for OLSH (1-3) in a loss at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
West Greene 6, Mayfield (Ohio) 3 – Katie Brudnock drove in three runs and Emmaline Beazell doubled and knocked in a run to back winning pitcher Payton Gilbert as West Greene (3-0) won at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Allderdice 5, OLSH 4 – Lukas Stead crushed a solo home run, Landon Blank doubled and drove in two runs and Donovan Snelsire knocked in a run and doubled as Allderdice (3-1) defeated OLSH (2-4) in nonsection play. Ryan DeNinno went 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Chargers. Carson O’Leary got the win for the Dragons.
Aquinas Academy 12, Summit Academy 2 – Richie Haring doubled and drove in two runs, winning pitcher Zach Yohe had a hit and two RBIs and Ian Patterson plated two runs as Aquinas Academy (2-1, 2-0) defeated Summit Academy (0-3, 0-2) in Section 2-A.
Baldwin 7, West Mifflin 6 – Matt Musial was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs in a nonsection win for Baldwin (1-2). Dylan Hartman had a hit and an RBI for the Highlanders. Caden Wills went 2 for 3 and had three RBIs for West Mifflin (4-3).
Belle Vernon 12, Uniontown 0 – Winning pitcher Lucas Judy gave up one hit and fanned 12 in six shutout innings while doubling and driving in three runs to lead Belle Vernon (4-0, 2-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Cole Matusik homered, tripled and had two RBIs for the Leopards. Shane Kelly had the only hit for Uniontown (1-3, 0-2).
Burgettstown 8, Chartiers-Houston 4 – William Stevenson drove in two runs and Sam Elich doubled and had an RBI in a Section 1-2A win for Burgettstown (3-0, 2-0). Jayden Roach tripled and Charles Brian (3 for 4) had an RBI for the Blue Devils. Paul Wiliamson went 2 for 3 and had an RBI for Chartiers-Houston (2-2, 0-2).
Canon-McMillan 3, Montour 2 – Brayden Radue had the game-winning RBI in the fifth inning to lead Canon-McMillan (4-1) past Montour (1-2) in a nonsection contest. Troy Stimpson and M.J. Maruschak each doubled and Kolton Smittle got the win for the Big Macs.
Carmichaels 13, Frazier 8 – Four Mighty Mikes had two RBIs each with Robbie Wilson-Jones leading the way with a triple and a 3 for 4 effort in a nonsection win for Carmichaels (3-1-1). Jordan Davis went 3 for 5 while Colin Andrews and Chase Ankrom each had two hits for Carmichaels. Tyler Morrison went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs and Aiden Hardy was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Frazier (4-2).
Eden Christian 13, Clairton 1 – Jacob Janicki went 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs for Eden Christian (5-0, 2-0) in its Section 3-A win. Noah Emswiler doubled and had three RBIs, while Brett Feldman (4 for 5, RBI) and Christian Watkins (1 for 2, three RBIs) combined to drive in four in the win. Adonte Wiggins went 2 for 3 and doubled for Clairton (0-5, 0-2).
Elizabeth Forward 17, Yough 11 – Aiden Grimes doubled and finished with four RBIs, Mitchell Vuik tripled and drove in three and Luke Ruskay added three RBIs to lead Elizabeth Forward (3-1) to a nonsection win. Cy Herchelroath and Joseph Crovak each doubled and knocked in a run and Nathan Grimm picked up the win for the Warriors. Gabe Shakoske and Tyler Burkett each had two RBIs for Yough (0-3).
Fox Chapel 13, Armstrong 8 – Blake Krushinski tripled and had three RBIs in a nonsection win for Fox Chapel (3-2). Elias George went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Everett Clanton had four hits, doubled and drove a run in for the Foxes. Ian Graham (2 for 4) had two doubles and four RBIs for Armstrong (0-2).
Greensburg Salem 13, Southmoreland 2 – Winning pitcher Braedon Leatherman gave up one hit in five innings while striking out nine in a nonsection win for Greensburg Salem (2-2). Leatherman also helped his cause with an RBI, and Robert Visnick doubled and drove in three runs for the Golden Lions. Nick Lubecki went 1 for 3 with an RBI for Southmoreland.
Highlands 8, Riverview 2 – Trent Durci drove in three runs, Jarrod Singer and Matt Karolkowski each doubled and knocked in a run and Jake King went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Highlands (3-0) exploded for seven sixth-inning runs to beat Riverview (4-1) in nonsection play. Winning pitcher Troy Bielak gave up two runs, one unearned, on three hits and struck out six while also driving in a run for the Golden Rams. Tyler Aftanas doubled and drove in a run for the Raiders.
Indiana 10, Kiski Area 0 – Carter Putt (2 for 2, three RBIs) and Charlie Manzi (double, two RBIs) combined for five RBIs in a nonsection win for Indiana (2-0). Rocco Cosentino, Charlie Manzi and Caden Force doubled in the win. John Deluca had a hit for Kiski Area (0-3).
Mars 3, North Hills 1 – Vinny Gottschalk doubled and Daniel Murray doubled and drove in a run as Mars (1-2) beat North Hills (2-3) in nonsection play. Liam Connelly doubled for the Indians. Grady Speigle picked up the win for the Fightin’ Planets.
Metrolina Christian Academy (N.C.) 12, West Greene 0 – Spencer Powell homered and drove in three runs while winning pitcher Chase Kiker threw five shutout innings, allowing one hit with 10 strikeouts as Metrolina Christian beat West Greene (0-3) at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Dylan Hughes had the lone hit for the Pioneers.
McGuffey 2, California 0 – Winning pitcher Reno Presto allowed three hits and struck out eight in four shutout innings and Brogan Meighen fanned a pair and gave up two hits in three shutout innings for the save as McGuffey (2-2) beat California (0-3) in nonsection play. Lincoln Johnson drove in a run for the Highlanders. Logan Hartley doubled for the Trojans.
Mt. Pleasant 8, Derry 7 – Levi Hixson delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Mt. Pleasant (3-2) past Derry (1-2) in nonsection play. Hixson and Quinn Painter finished with two RBIs apiece and Dane Firmstone tripled for the Vikings. Anthony Sacco drove in a pair of runs and John Wasnick doubled and had an RBI for the Trojans. Cole Chatfield earned the win for Mt. Pleasant.
Neshannock 12, Central Valley 11 – Lucca Mezzanotte went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs in a nonsection win for Neshannock (2-0). Hunter Wilson (3 for 4) and Ryan Cameron (2 for 4) combined for five hits for the Lancers. Nathan Angelo (4 for 5) doubled and had an RBI, while Jacob Hunter (3 for 5) doubled and had two RBIs for Central Valley (2-3).
New Brighton 10, Beaver Falls 0 – Brock Budacki tripled and drove in two runs and winning pitcher Carter Jackson went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs to lead New Brighton (2-3) to a nonsection shutout win over Beaver Falls (1-2).
Norwin 10, Upper St. Clair 3 – Nathan Helphenstine tripled and knocked in two runs and Brayden Wardzinski went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs as Norwin (2-3) beat Upper St. Clair (2-3) in nonsection play. Nolan Wilson doubled and drove in a run for the Panthers.
Quaker Valley 4, Keystone Oaks 3 – Ryan Finamore (2 for 2) doubled, homered and drove in two runs in a nonsection win for Quaker Valley (5-1-1). Todd Kagle doubled for the Quakers. Nathan Rohe had a home run and two RBIs for Keystone Oaks (2-3).
Riverside 4, West Allegheny 1 – Winning pitcher Zack Hare had 11 strikeouts and was 4 for 4 with an RBI in a nonsection win for Riverside (4-0). Hunter Gavin (2 for 3, two doubles) also plated a run in the win. Michael Johnson had a hit and an RBI for West Allegheny (2-3).
Seneca Valley 9, Mt. Lebanon 6 – Brian Kowalkowski homered and drove in three runs while Micah Olayer and Wes Conville each knocked in a pair to boost Seneca Valley (2-2) to a nonsection win against Mt. Lebanon (1-4). Graham Keen doubled for the Blue Devils.
South Allegheny 5, Gateway 4 – Hunter Fulmer yielded an unearned run on two hits and struck out 13 to earn a win in nonsection play for South Allegheny (1-3). Koltin Keener doubled and drove in three runs while Dillion Pomocki brought home two runs for the Gladiators. Donovan DeLuca, Jon Saunders and Max Cobbs each drove in a run for Gateway (3-1).
Valley 5, Hampton 2 – Nikolas Heakins, Benjamin Mehalick and winning pitcher Julian Danko each drove in a run as Valley (5-1) defeated Hampton (0-4) in a nonsection matchup. Carter DelGrosso slugged a solo homer and James Derence tripled and drove in a run for the Talbots.
Washington 19, Monessen 3 – Winning pitcher Isaac Charnik struck out eight while also going 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs in a nonsection win for Washington (1-5). Three other Prexies had three RBIs, led by Fernando Lozano’s 2 for 4 performance. R.J. DiEugenio doubled and Daniel drove in a run for Monessen (0-6, 0-2).
Waynesburg 17, Bentworth 10 – Ethan Kiger doubled and drove in four runs while Austin Surber had a home run and three RBIs in a nonsection win for Waynesburg (6-0). Chad Corwin went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Raiders. Ben Hays (2 for 3, two RBIs) and Clint Havanis (1 for 3, RBI) led the offense for Bentworth (1-2).
Western Beaver 12, Sewickley Academy 10 – Ethan Wilson went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, Sawyer Chaffe also slugged two doubles and knocked in three runs and winning pitcher Vinny Ross went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs on two doubles as Western Beaver (3-1) hung on to beat Sewickley Academy (0-3) in nonsection play. Austin Fritz went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Will Starka doubled and knocked in a pair for the Panthers.
Woodland Hills 12, McKeesport 2 – Aaron Concepcion led the way for Woodland Hills (2-1) with two hits, a home run and two RBIs in a nonsection win. DeVaughn Earl-Hayden doubled and had an RBI, while winning pitcher Joe Young tripled and plated a run. Jesse Richard and Justin Barber doubled for McKeesport (0-5).
Shaler 6, Knoch 4 – Landon Schiffauer went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Shaler (4-2, 2-0) in its nonsection win. Colby McGuire had a single and a double, while Max Saban doubled for the Titans. Kyle Morgan went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Sean Morgan and Dylan Roth doubled for Knoch (3-3-1).
Boys lacrosse
Hempfield 9, Franklin Regional 8 – Frank Somers scored a pair of goals to lead Hempfield to a nonsection win. Maddyn Bompiani, Austin Herron, Ryan Miller, Mats Martz, Nino Dipietro, Austin Taylor and Dylan Hall also scored for the Spartans.
Girls lacrosse
Hampton 15, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Ava Galuska scored four goals, Lizzy Saponsky collected three goals and an assist, Dillon Perry added three goals and Taylor Whitman made 12 saves to lead Hampton to a Section 1-2A win.
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Montour 0 – Justin Peters had seven kills, 14 assists and two blocks, Jack Steele finished with nine kills, four blocks and five aces and Landon Patterson had six kills and six digs as Canon-McMillan swept Montour in nonsection play. Aydin Winkelblech dished 12 assists for the Big Macs.
Derry 3, Steel Valley 0 – Caden Marsh had six kills, Duke Klapchar recorded five kills and seven digs and John Kerin dished out 22 assists to lead Derry to a Section 1-2A victory.
Shaler 5, Aquinas Academy 0 – Adam Hoffman and Jacob Crissman each had five kills, Aiden Smith handed out 21 assists and Justin Truong had 17 digs and five aces to lead Shaler to a Section 2-2A win.
Hockey
Charleston (S.C.) 4, Burrell 1 – Burrell gave up a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the game and fell, 4-1, to Charleston (S.C.) at the USA Hockey National Championships in High School Division 1A in California. Luke Mink scored to cut the deficit to one late in the first period, but Burrell got no closer. Kooper Price made 20 saves. Burrell, which won its opener Wednesday, will face Jackson (Wyo.) in its final pool play game Friday.
