Smith: Did you feel the earthquake of 2018?

“Outta’ My Mind on a Monday Mornin’”

I suppose it’s too late to print up and sell T-shirts that say, “I survived the quake of 2018!” I suppose somebody already has.

A lot of people are still talking about what they felt and what they heard. Heard?! University of Michigan professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Seismologist, Larry Ruff, reminds us what people heard was the noise of whatever was around them, basically shaking, rocking and rolling. My listeners went from hearing nothing (like me) to saying they felt like a train was speeding by, while a helicopter hovered overhead. Again, unfortunately, I missed it all.

Book alert. Earlier in the week, we coincidentally interviewed Lucy Jones about her new book, “The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (and What We Can Do About Them.)” Good timing.

Speaking of books, Metro Detroit’s Biggest and Best Used Book and Media Sale is underway at Laurel Park Place in Livonia. Today is Monday Madness Day, with the first 1,000 shoppers getting some special goodies.

This great extravaganza runs through this Sunday, benefiting literacy and education projects in metropolitan Detroit. Kudos to honorary co-chairs Rochelle Riley and our own Neal Rubin.

Looking for a little work and a lot of fun? Chairman of the 2018 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, Bud Denker, and general manager Michael Montri are looking for a few hundred more volunteers to help host one of the most popular and positive events of the summer in the Motor City. It’s all happening on Belle Isle Park June 1-3.

Cryptic note: Cuba with Paul W. and Kim. Call (800) 383-3131 Cigars, Cars and Culture, and Mexico and Belize too!

Paul W. Smith is host of The Paul W. Smith Show on WJR-AM (760) from 5:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
