Costa Rica installs equipment in Poás volcano to monitor its activity

San José, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) An infrared camera to measure the temperature in high resolution of the eruptions was installed in the Poás volcano in Costa Rica, a volcano that is experiencing these days an increase in its activity, official sources informed.

The Observatory of Volcanology and Seismology of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) in coordination with the National System of Conservation Areas announced that a gravimeter, a magnetometer and ultrasound equipment were also installed to record the acoustic sounds of the volcano.

A siren was also installed for park rangers to alert visitors in case of an emergency eruption.

Active for several weeks, the fall of ashes and the presence of gases, especially sulfur dioxide, are causing concern among the population in the vicinity of the volcano.

For such reasons, the National Emergency Commission declared green alert in six cantons of the province of Alajuela, affected by the ash fall and the strong smell of sulfur.

The volcano remains catalogued in warning level in which there are possible manifestations such as: small eruptions, bubbling, geyser, significant emission of acid gases, temperature increase (incandescence) and seismic swarms/volcanic tremor, inflation-extension of the volcanic edifice.
