Sept. 27 (UPI) — At least one person died in Greece on Monday after a powerful earthquake shook the island of Crete.
The quake, which registered a magnitude of 6.0, occurred just after dawn in Heraklion, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
A 65-year-old man was killed when a church collapsed during the quake.
Scientists said the quake was followed by several aftershocks.
Archanes Mayor Manolis Kokosalis reported damage to the water supply system, and the shaking damaged structures in Arkalochori near the epicenter.
The Mediterranean nation lies near the African and Eurasian plates and earthquakes are not uncommon there.
The deadliest quake on record occurred in 1908 and killed as many as 120,000 people. A 7.0-magnitude quake a year ago killed dozens.
