Kashmir earthquake: India and Pakistan ROCKED by ‘horrible’ 5.6 quake

KASHMIR has been hit by a strong earthquake, with people in India and Pakistan reporting shaking.

The strong 5.6 quake struck at 4.47pm GMT at a depth of 40km. Witnesses recorded their experiences on earthquake-tracking website EMSC-CSEM. One said: “Felt this tremor. It was horrible.” Another said: “It was a strong jolt, had to run out of my bed!”

A third said: “Oh it was horrible, the same as three days ago!”

A fourth said: “It was strong, lasted for more than 30 seconds and had strong shake.”

The earthquake was felt in the major Pakistani city of Islamabad, located 25 miles away.

The US Geological Society said earthquakes are common in the area.

However, the natural phenomenon caused panic across the country.

Another person who felt it said: “It was like a sudden jerk which goes on and on like a vibration.”

They said: “Shallow earthquakes within the Indo-Burmese Arc, predominantly occur on a combination of strike-slip and reverse faults, including the Sagaing, Kabaw and Dauki faults.

“Between 1930 and 1956, six M7.0+ earthquakes occurred near the right-lateral Sagaing Fault, resulting in severe damage in Myanmar including the generation of landslides, liquefaction and the loss of 610 lives.

“Deep earthquakes (200km) have also been known to occur in this region, these are thought to be due to the subduction of the eastwards dipping, India plate, though whether subduction is currently active is debated.

“Within the pre-instrumental period, the large Shillong earthquake occurred on the 12 June 1897, causing widespread destruction.”
