Students around Washoe County took part in the Great Nevada ShakeOut, an annual earthquake drill that promotes awareness and safety.

The Washoe County School District said students and staff would be joining in the ShakeOut at 10:19 a.m.

Participants were instructed to drop to the ground, take cover under desks or tables and hold on for 60 seconds.

Seismologists with the University of Nevada, Reno say people should not run out of buildings, or risk injuries from shattered glass or falling building materials.

Nevada is in the Basin and Range Province, one of the most seismically active regions in the U.S., according to seismologists.
