Of all the downsides of living in Seattle (the traffic, the weather, the bagels), perhaps the biggest bummer of all is knowing that someday—any day—the massive faultline underneath us is going to rupture. And when this happens, the earth will sway, buildings will collapse, and a whole lot of us will spend our final moments crushed under the weight of the very possessions we worked so hard to acquire. In the words of our future ex president: SAD.

While one could argue that it is the job of the FEDERAL, STATE, and LOCAL GOVERNMENTS to protect citizens from this inevitable disaster, the reality is, you're pretty much going to be on your own—if you survive at all. At this point, the government is recommending that you store two weeks worth of emergency supplies, which might be fine if you live in a mansion on Capitol Hill but is a bit of a problem for those of us who live in apartments the size of jail cells. Everyone, however, can participate in the Great Washington ShakeOut, an annual state-wide earthquake drill that takes place this year on October 19 at 10:19 a.m.

Not to jinx it or anything, but you know what was going on in Mexico right before the 7.1 earthquake that killed over 200 last month? A nationwide earthquake drill. Will we see a repeat of this eerie conicidence Thursday? Good God, I hope not, but you can register for the Great Washington Shakeout here. And if/when this fault line cracks: Remember, drop, cover, and hold on like your life depends on it.
