Whitecaps rally for draw against Earthquakes

Yordy Reyna scored the tying goal and also contributed an assist, and the Vancouver Whitecaps settled for a second consecutive 2-2 draw at home, this time against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night.

Cristian Techera also scored for Vancouver (4-5-3), which has now drawn half of its six home matches this season.

Reyna, who had six goals and four assists over 18 appearances last season, got his first of each in 2018, but he also had a golden chance at a game-winning goal denied by Quakes 'keeper Andrew Tarbell late.

Danny Hoesen scored his fifth goal of the campaign for San Jose (2-5-3), which picked up an away draw for the second time this season. Nick Lima added his first of the year for the Earthquakes, who have played back-to-back away games without defeat for the first time this season.

Having provided the service to give Vancouver an early lead, Reyna tied it on a crafty play in the 64th minute to tie it at 2-all.

Marcel de Jong curled in an early cross from the left into the penalty area. Reyna appeared to nudge defender Shea Salinas slightly to create some space, then headed de Jong's service back across Tarbell's goal and inside the left post.

With San Jose trailing early, Hoesen pulled the Quakes level at 1-1 in first-half stoppage time. With Vancouver's back line pressing high to try and force an offside call, Florian Jungwirth played a long, arcing ball into the penalty area.

Hoesen ran onto it and the linesman's flag stayed down, allowing the Dutch striker to guide a half-volley over goalie Brian Rowe.

San Jose had a brief lead eight minutes after halftime. Vako made a storming run through midfield toward Vancouver's penalty area. Then he slotted a ball right to Lima, who cut inside and unfurled a left-footed shot into the top left corner from 20 yards out.

Techera gave Vancouver the lead in the 19th minute when he sprinted onto Reyna's throughball and slotted a left-footed finish beyond Tarbell and inside the right post.

Tarbell finished with seven saves while Rowe was credited with one save.
