Good morning Canberra.

What a day it promises to be for the ACT and for Australia.

We're expecting a top of 28 degrees with light winds and sunny conditions in the capital, after an overnight low of 9 degrees.

Here's all the news you need to start your day:

Six-storey development planned for Kingston

A six-storey, 79-unit mixed commercial and residential development is planned for one of Kingston foreshore's prime waterfront spots.

Canberra developer Keggins Homes has applied for an exemption from having to do an environmental impact statement. The block is identified on the register of contaminated sites and asbestos has been found in soil testing, including in the footprint of a former rowing club building on site.

Han Nguyen reports the rowing club is being demolished.

Frankie Bodel's boss knows she's going to be late to work on Wednesday.

When the Australian Bureau of Statistics announces the results of the government's same-sex marriage survey at 10am, Ms Bodel and her partner Julie Maynard will be in Haig Park with hundreds of their closest friends, waiting for an earthquake.

The couple are among hundreds of thousands of Canberrans eager for changes to federal marriage laws.

Former prime minister John Howard says he's expecting a call up as the Coalition campaigns to retain his former Sydney seat of Bennelong, hours after former NSW premier Kristina Keneally was named as Labor's candidate.

Launching a new book of unpublished documents from the early years of the Howard government held at UNSW Canberra, Australia's second-longest serving prime minister told an audience at Old Parliament House on Tuesday night that careful historical analysis of politics was critical to better understanding of federal Parliament.

Mr Howard said he suspects it will be difficult for him not to get reengaged in a certain by-election in the coming weeks.

Well may we say...

The first residents of a new Canberra suburb named after former prime minister Gough Whitlam are expected to move in by 2020.

The ACT government said on Tuesday it had officially gazetted the new Molonglo Valley suburb - recognition of the contribution Australia's 21st prime minister made to the national capital.

Plans to name a suburb after the Labor legend were first announced on the eve of the 40th anniversary of his dismissal from government in 2015.

Han Nguyen reports Bunnings has been working to finalise an agreement for the former Masters site and workers have been told the Fyshwick site will close soon.

Bunnings did not confirm a closing date.
